Nautical nuttiness...

...at this morning's car show!

Anyone itching to hit the beaches couldn't do better than this early-1950s Willys Jeepster, complete with surfboard and palm-frond "roof"...

Note the license plate. The owner is a serious surfer, who obviously wants to be somewhere else...

As an alternative, you might want to consider the early-1960s Amphicar, a clever German device that is both boat and car...

Pull a lever, and the engine drives these two propellers instead of the wheels. Sadly, the Amphicar wasn't all that good in either of its roles...

More to come....

Wasn't the amphicar in one or more movies? Looks novel, but I can think of other, more interesting ways to spend money. :)

The surf car brings back memories. My grandfather had one that he let us drive all over the farm when we were kids. Of course, his wasn't that cool--basically a green jeep without a roof. But to a bunch of kids it was perfect.

I always wanted one of those amphicars....

I'm surprised that there haven't been more amphicars built, given the better technology now. I have seen pics of a recent one, but it's not mass market.

dal -- I can imagine all the state and provincial governments salivating at the thought of collecting TWO license fees for a single vehicle!
