February 23, 1945

Joe Rosenthal, whose photograph of Marines raising the flag on Mount Suribachi on the island of Iwo Jima became one of the most enduring images of World War II, has died at the age of 94.

I can never look at this picture without feeling gratitude, not just to these Marines, but all members of our armed forces who have risked much and too often sacrificed all for their country.

I think this is THE most famous picture ever. Great photojournalism. May he rest in peace. ((hugs)) from Sunny
